Sleep Terror Disorder
Sleep Terror is a sudden arousal from a deep sleep with a piercing scream or cry. There also may be sweating, an intense fear and an increase in heart rate of up to 170 beats per minute. It is estimated that up to 15 percent of children suffer from the Sleep Terror Disorder ranging from the ages of four years old up to twelve. In most cases the Sleep Terror Disorder typically ends before puberty.
Sleep Terror (also called night terrors) can also be associated with sleepwalking and this can become serious. A person having a sleep terror and sleepwalking episode could injure themselves or anyone that may try to wake them. In most cases of these episodes the sleeper will not have any recollection of the incident.
Sleep Terror Disorders in adults are more common in males and can also be hereditary. It is attributed to a still maturing nervous system. Sleep Terror in adults is often brought on by stress and emotional tension. In more serious case, Sleep Terrors and Sleepwalking can be treated with medications and living a healthier lifestyle.
