Mattress Topper and Allergies

Mattress covers and pads encase a mattress to protect your body from inhaling dust mites, molds and mildews that accumulate over time inside the mattress. The worst and the most common place to find dust mites is inside your mattress and pillows. Dust mites are the leading cause for allergy and asthma problems.

Memory Foam Mattress Pad

Memory foam mattress pads provide conforming support while also reducing allergy issues. A visco elastic memory foam mattress topper is chemically resistant to molds, mildews and dust mites. It is also very important to choose a high quality, high density memory foam mattress topper. There are many memory foams on the market that will breakdown in a short period of time. The higher density the foam the longer the foam will last and create the conforming support needed.

Latex Mattress Pad

A Latex mattress pad may be natural or synthetic or even a combination of the two depending on what company you choose. A natural latex mattress pad is made from the milky white substance that come from a rubber tree. The synthetic latex mattress pad has all the same properties as the natural but actually has a longer lifetime. Both natural and synthetic latex are hypoallergenic and resists or reduces dust mites and household allergens. Molds, mildews and bacteria can not live in a latex mattress. Latex toppers are obviously not recommended for people with an allergy to latex.

Magnetic Mattress Pad

Magnetic mattress pads are commonly used for medical therapy in Japan. There has been a lot of controversy on whether magnetic therapy is beneficial to the body. There are claims that a magnetic mattress pad will relieve aches, stiffness and increase circulation to the body. The magnetic mattress pads are normaly made with hypoallergenic materials and memory foam along with the circular magnets but there doesn’t seem to be any great benefits for people with dust allergies or asthma.

Organic Mattress Pads

Organic mattress pads are 100 percent natural and are free of any chemical or synthetic materials, they also are normally made in a chemical free environment by hand. The natural mattress pads can be made of wool, cotton and even organic latex just to name a few. There are some benefits of the organic toppers such as people with allergies or sensitivities to chemicals will find that a natural product may help. Other than with natural latex mattresses there hasn’t been any organic pads to really help with allergies to dust or allergens to mold and mildew. It seems that with organic products it is recommended to avoid any moisture on the mattress pads so that molds and mildews can not develop.
